Horsetooth Reservoir, pictured here in 1959, is part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, a major transbasin diversion consisting of a network of ditches, reservoirs, and a tunnel to transport water from the Western Slope's Colorado River to users on the Front Range in Northern Colorado. Horsetooth Reservoir stores water for a variety of users, including ditch companies, agriculture, and municipalities. A significant amount of Fort Collins' municipal water comes from Horsetooth. The reservoir also serves recreational interests with its scenic hiking opportunities and boating and fishing amenities. Courtesy of the Fort Collins Museum Local History Archive
