Making the Leap: Professionalization for Historians

Alex Miller to share experience navigating the mid-COVID job market

Join the Public Lands History Center for an exciting virtual brown bag professionalization event featuring CSU Department of History and PLHC alumus, Alex Miller. A former Programs of Research and Scholarly Excellence (PRSE) graduate research fellow for the PLHC, Alex has gone on from his graduate degree in History to pursue a career working on public lands. He applies his knowledge of environmental and public history to serve the outdoor recreation community in Montrose, Colorado. As a Public Lands Ambassador with the San Juan Mountains Association, Alex provides visitors with information about public lands, educates them about leave no trace ethics, and teaches land users how to recreate responsibly on the abundant public lands surrounding Montrose. He also participates in community events and helps the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management develop interpretive and educational materials through the association’s cooperative partnerships with both agencies.

A public historian in the wild

At the virtual professionalization brown bag, Alex will speak about his experience navigating the mid-COVID job market and how roles outside of the field of history benefit from a historian’s perspective. Nontraditional jobs, as Alex will discuss, often provide unexpected opportunities to use and strengthen the academic skills students learn in the classroom. From research to public speaking, Alex has applied his skills as a historian to his current work with the San Juan Mountains Association and encourages other historians to think broadly about how to apply their skills when working with the public.

How to attend

Please join the PLHC by Zoom on April 1, 2022 from 12:00-1:00 pm. This event is open to all students interested in learning more about how liberal arts skills translate into successful careers on public lands, in the non-profit sector, and in public service. This event will be of use primarily to graduate students seeking information about how to navigate the current job market with a liberal arts degree.
