Harvey Johnson (standing, right) was one of Fort Collins’ most influential mayors. A farmer and rancher by background, he also served for over fifty years on the board of directors for the Water Supply and Storage Company, including a stint as its president. Johnson’s keen understanding of water use helped him secure a stable water supply for Fort Collins, as massive growth starting in the 1960s threatened to overwhelm the city’s municipal water operations. Johnson also created the Water Board to advise the city council on all water-related matters, which it continues to do today. Courtesy of the Fort Collins Museum Local History Archive
